What Indiana requires, how Sellersburg's crash count, the US 31 rebuild, the I-65 exits, deer season and Louisville commutes shape a local driver's coverage, what moves the price, and what to ask before your next car insurance quote.

Quick answer

Car insurance in Sellersburg, Indiana runs on state rules: liability of at least 25/50/25, and uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage on every new policy unless you turn it down in writing. The local part is the road: two I-65 exits, a US 31 rebuild that closed one direction at a time in 2026, deer season on the roads around town and Louisville commutes.

* Sellersburg had **335 collisions in 2024**, roughly one in twelve of Clark County's 3,994, according to the Indiana University Public Policy Institute.
* INDOT lists Exit 7 (State Road 60) and Exit 9 (State Road 311) on I-65 as Sellersburg interchanges.
* The Town of Sellersburg's posted schedule keeps northbound US 31 closed until early November 2026.
* Indiana drivers spent an average of $926.42 per insured vehicle in 2023 (NAIC). That's a statewide average, not your price.

Do this: pull up your declarations page and look at your per-person liability limit, your uninsured/underinsured motorist limits and your comprehensive and collision deductibles.

## What car insurance does Indiana require for a Sellersburg driver?

**The short answer:** You need liability coverage of at least $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident and $25,000 for property damage, and a new policy carries uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage unless you reject it in writing.

Those three numbers come from [Indiana Code 9-25-4-5](https://law.justia.com/codes/indiana/title-9/article-25/chapter-4/section-9-25-4-5/). The property damage figure rose from $10,000 to $25,000 on July 1, 2018, so a page that still quotes "25/50/10" is out of date. The Indiana BMV calls today's rule the [25/50/25 minimum liability insurance requirement](https://www.in.gov/bmv/licenses-permits-ids/suspension-and-reinstatement/proof-of-financial-responsibility/).

The second rule comes from the [Indiana Department of Insurance](https://www.in.gov/idoi/consumer-services/types-of-insurance/auto-insurance/): each newly written auto liability policy must include uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage unless you reject it in writing. The department lists the uninsured motorist minimums as $25,000/$50,000 for injuries and $25,000 for property damage, and the underinsured motorist minimum as $50,000 for injuries. For the legal detail, including proof of insurance and SR22 rules, see our guide to [what car insurance Indiana requires](https://yellowribboninsurance.com/blog/auto-insurance/what-car-insurance-is-required-in-indiana/).

Think of the minimum as the floor the state sets, not the amount your household should carry. This is how each coverage maps onto driving in and around Sellersburg.

| Coverage | What it pays for | The Sellersburg question to ask |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Bodily injury and property damage liability | Injuries and damage you cause to other people | If I cause a crash merging onto I-65 at State Road 60, would my per-person limit cover a serious injury? |
| Uninsured and underinsured motorist | Your injuries, and your car where uninsured motorist property damage is on the policy, when the driver at fault has no insurance or too little | Are my UM/UIM limits as high as my liability limits? |
| Collision | Damage to your car from a collision or upset, after your deductible | Could I pay this deductible after a slow-speed bump on a detour route? |
| Comprehensive | Theft, fire, windstorm, hail, falling trees, glass and striking an animal, after your deductible | What would I owe if I hit a deer on a county road in October? |

A lender or leasing company may require comprehensive and collision, so read the finance contract too. Our [car insurance page](https://yellowribboninsurance.com/auto/) lists the auto coverages we write, and our [complete Indiana car insurance guide](https://yellowribboninsurance.com/blog/auto-insurance/indiana-car-insurance-guide-coverage-costs-and-quote-questions/) explains each coverage line statewide.

## How many crashes happen inside Sellersburg?

**The short answer:** Indiana University's Public Policy Institute counted 335 collisions inside Sellersburg in 2024, about one in twelve of the 3,994 in Clark County, with 12 of them speed-related and 3 involving alcohol.

335

Collisions in Sellersburg in 2024, out of 3,994 in Clark County. Source: Indiana Traffic Safety Facts, [Clark County 2024](https://policyinstitute.iu.edu/research-analysis/traffic-safety/county/2024/clark.pdf), Indiana University Public Policy Institute. Checked October 2026.

The count is for crashes inside town limits, whoever was driving, so it includes people passing through on US 31 and State Road 60 as well as residents. The institute's [2023 county report](https://policyinstitute.iu.edu/research-analysis/traffic-safety/county/2023/clark.pdf) listed 315 Sellersburg collisions, so 2024 was a little higher. The town has grown, too: the Census Bureau's [QuickFacts](https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/sellersburgtownindiana/PST045224) shows 10,305 residents in its July 2025 estimate, about 11% more than the 9,310 counted in 2020.

The other driver in a crash may not carry much insurance, or any. The Insurance Research Council estimates [14.0% of Indiana drivers](https://www.iii.org/fact-statistic/facts-statistics-uninsured-motorists) were uninsured in 2023, the latest year the Insurance Information Institute publishes.

**Where a minimum policy runs out:** if a driver who carries only 25/50/25, or nothing, injures you, your own uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage is the part of your policy that responds. Check that those limits aren't lower than your liability limits, and ask whether uninsured motorist property damage is on your policy.

## How do the US 31 rebuild and the I-65 exits change driving in Sellersburg?

**The short answer:** They put more traffic on detours, side streets and interchange ramps for now, which doesn't change your policy itself but makes it worth checking your liability limits, collision deductible and the mileage on your quote.

The [Indiana Department of Transportation's interchange list](https://www.in.gov/indot/resources/maps/interchange-book/i-65-from-jeffersonville-to-portage/) names Exit 7 at State Road 60 and Exit 9 at State Road 311 as Sellersburg's I-65 exits, and also labels Exit 16 at Memphis-Blue Lick Road as Sellersburg.

In 2026 the bigger change has been on US 31. INDOT's [US 31 pavement replacement](https://www.in.gov/indot/about-indot/central-office/welcome-to-the-seymour-district/us-31-pavement-replacement-in-sellersburg-clark-county/) project closed one direction at a time. The [Town of Sellersburg's closure schedule](https://sellersburg.org/featured_events/indot-us-31-closures/) showed southbound US 31 closed from County Road 403 to Prather Lane from February 17 into late spring, then northbound closed "until early November." For drivers coming in from the County Road 403 side, the town suggests Stacy Road, Salem-Noble Road and Bethany Road to East 10th Street (State Road 62) and I-265, or INDOT's posted detour north to Henryville.

The finished road should look different. When it previewed the work in 2025, the town said the plan [adds a third lane from Utica Street to Route 403](https://sellersburg.org/info-on-upcoming-indot-projects-in-and-around-the-town-of-sellersburg/), rebuilds two intersections and adds sidewalks to the Silver Creek campus and signalized crosswalks.

According to the same update, INDOT also planned a new light at East St. Joe Road and State Road 60 because drivers avoiding US 31 to reach the Silver Creek schools were expected to add traffic there. Roundabouts on State Road 60 at County Road 311, Perry Crossing and Grantline Road were on the same list.

None of that rewrites your policy, but it changes how you drive:

* **A bump in a lane shift or at a detour stop sign:** property damage liability pays for the other car, and collision pays for yours after your deductible.
* **Someone is hurt:** bodily injury liability pays up to your per-person limit, and anything above it can be sought from you.
* **A longer daily loop:** if the detour adds real miles to your week, mention it at your next review, because the Indiana Department of Insurance lists car use among the factors insurers may use.

For current closures, check INDOT's [INDOT4U](https://www.in.gov/indot/indot4u/) service.

## What pays when you hit a deer on the roads around Sellersburg?

**The short answer:** Hitting the deer is a comprehensive claim, but swerving and hitting a car, fence or tree is usually a collision claim, and that difference changes which deductible you pay.

The [Indiana DNR](https://www.in.gov/dnr/fish-and-wildlife/wildlife-resources/animals/white-tailed-deer/living-with-deer/deer-vehicle-collisions) says more than 15,000 deer-vehicle collisions are reported to INDOT each year, with an estimated $104.5 million in vehicle damage in 2024. They're most frequent from September through December, especially in October and November, and at dawn and dusk. Those are statewide figures; no Sellersburg count is published.

The DNR's advice is blunt: "Never swerve to avoid hitting a deer." Braking and hitting the deer, it says, is safer than swerving off the road or into oncoming traffic. Insurance works along the same line. The [Insurance Information Institute](https://www.iii.org/article/what-covered-basic-auto-insurance-policy) lists striking an animal under comprehensive, while collision covers a crash with another vehicle or a stationary object.

Illustrative scenario

A hypothetical Sellersburg driver meets a deer at dusk in October. The driver's car would need $4,000 in repairs either way. The policy has a $500 comprehensive deductible and a $1,000 collision deductible. In the second version, the driver swerves into an oncoming car and is found at fault; that car needs $6,000 in repairs, and its driver has $40,000 in medical bills.

| What happened | Policy pays / You pay |
| --- | --- |
| Brakes and hits the deer: own car under comprehensive ($4,000 damage, $500 deductible) | $3,500 / $500 |
| Swerves instead: own car under collision ($4,000 damage, $1,000 deductible, applied once) | $3,000 / $1,000 |
| Other car's repairs under property damage liability ($6,000, within the $25,000 limit; no deductible) | $6,000 / $0 |
| Other driver's injuries at the 25/50/25 minimum ($25,000 per-person limit) | $25,000 / $15,000 can be sought from you |
| Same injuries with a $100,000 per-person limit | $40,000 / $0 |

Hypothetical figures for illustration only, not a quote or a promise of how any claim is paid. One person is injured, so the per-person limit, not the $50,000 per-accident limit, is the cap. Fault, coverage and payment depend on the facts and your policy; your limits and deductibles are on your declarations page.

**Before deer season:** confirm you carry comprehensive. A liability-only policy pays nothing toward your own car after a deer strike.

## Does commuting from Sellersburg to Louisville change your car insurance?

**The short answer:** The policy is still written around where the car is kept in Sellersburg, but a daily river crossing adds miles and road time, which belong in the car-use details you give for a quote.

The Census Bureau puts Sellersburg's mean travel time to work at [20.0 minutes](https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/sellersburgtownindiana/PST045224) (2020–2024 American Community Survey). We couldn't find a Sellersburg-only count of Kentucky commuters, but countywide, [STATS Indiana](https://www.stats.indiana.edu/web/county/commuting/2024/Clark.asp) reports that 14,333 Clark County residents commuted to work in Kentucky in tax year 2024, 17.6% of the county's resident labor force.

On I-65, the river crossing is the Kennedy Bridge southbound and the Abraham Lincoln Bridge northbound, and both are tolled. [RiverLink](https://riverlink.com/about/non-tolled-alternatives/) also tolls the Lewis and Clark Bridge, while the Clark Memorial (Second Street) Bridge in Jeffersonville and the Sherman Minton Bridge (I-64) in New Albany stay toll-free.

Since July 1, 2026, the [standard passenger toll is $5.57 per crossing](https://riverlink.com/2026/06/15/reminder-new-toll-rates-effective-july-1-5/), and passenger vehicles with a transponder on a prepaid account in good standing pay 50% less. RiverLink adjusts rates every year.

Tolls don't affect your insurance; the mileage does, so have your work days and round-trip miles ready when you quote.

### A crash on the Kentucky side

Report it to your own insurance company as you would any other crash. Kentucky's no-fault law (KRS 304.39) lets drivers reject its limits on lawsuits, but the [Kentucky Department of Insurance](https://insurance.ky.gov/ppc/newstatic_info.aspx?static_id=24) says the rejection must be made on a special written form and filed with the department before it takes effect. The department also says basic personal injury protection provides up to $10,000 per person per accident for medical expenses, lost wages and similar out-of-pocket costs.

How your Indiana policy responds to a Kentucky crash depends on its wording, so ask before you need to know. Our [Jeffersonville car insurance guide](https://yellowribboninsurance.com/blog/auto-insurance/car-insurance-in-jeffersonville-indiana-coverage-costs-and-quote-questions/) goes further into the bridges and the county's Kentucky commute.

## Who in your Sellersburg household should your policy be built around?

**The short answer:** Every licensed driver in the home belongs on the quote, and with 22.9% of Sellersburg residents 65 or older, both ends of the age range can matter when you set limits.

The Census Bureau's [QuickFacts](https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/sellersburgtownindiana/PST045224) puts 22.9% of residents at 65 or older and 18.0% under 18, and 80.0% of occupied homes are owner-occupied (2020–2024 American Community Survey). The Indiana Department of Insurance lists age, driver record, driver training and car use among the factors insurers may use to price a policy.

Clark County's crash report shows how sharply crash involvement changes with age. In 2024 the [IU Public Policy Institute](https://policyinstitute.iu.edu/research-analysis/traffic-safety/county/2024/clark.pdf) counted 1,178.3 drivers in crashes per 10,000 licensed drivers aged 15 to 20, about 2.7 times the 438.5 for drivers 65 and older. These are countywide rates, not a prediction for anyone in your family.

Two household moments are worth a call:

* **A teen gets a permit or license:** tell your agent before the first solo drive, and ask how a permit holder is handled on your policy.
* **Someone retires:** a commute that stops is a change in car use. Say so at your next review.

## How much does car insurance cost in Sellersburg?

**The short answer:** No official Sellersburg average is published, but NAIC data put Indiana's average spend at $926.42 per insured vehicle in 2023, and your own price comes from your drivers, cars, garaging address and coverage choices.

The [NAIC's 2023 Auto Insurance Database supplement](https://content.naic.org/sites/default/files/aut-db_1.pdf) (published June 2025) is the most recent official state figure. Indiana's average expenditure was $926.42 in 2023, up from $814.11 in 2022 and below the $1,281.60 countrywide figure. The NAIC's combined average premium for Indiana, which adds the average liability, collision and comprehensive premiums together, was $1,031.86. Both describe 2023 spending, not a price you'll be offered.

Online Sellersburg figures don't agree: one is a six-month number, two annual figures sit about $80 apart, and one list of monthly prices has no source. Each prices its own sample driver, car and coverage, so none is a Sellersburg average or your rate. The [Indiana Department of Insurance](https://www.in.gov/idoi/consumer-services/types-of-insurance/auto-insurance/) doesn't set auto rates; companies file their rates with it. Here's how the factors it lists show up for a Sellersburg household.

### Garaging address

Quote the Sellersburg address where each car spends the night, even if you work across the river.

### Miles and use

A retiree's errands, an I-65 commute and a detour-heavy year are different exposures. Give real numbers.

### Drivers at home

Age, driver training and experience all count, which is why a new teen driver changes a quote.

### Driving record and claims

Tickets, at-fault crashes and claims history are on the department's list.

### Type of car

Repair and replacement cost drive the comprehensive and collision part of the premium.

### Limits, deductibles, discounts

Higher limits cost more and higher deductibles cost less. Discounts may be available; eligibility varies.

Our breakdown of [what car insurance costs in Indiana](https://yellowribboninsurance.com/blog/auto-insurance/how-much-does-car-insurance-cost-in-indiana/) covers the NAIC data and the 2022-to-2023 rise in more depth. If you own your home in Sellersburg, ask whether one account for home and auto could help; our [bundling guide](https://yellowribboninsurance.com/blog/bundle-and-save/) explains what to check (discounts may be available; eligibility varies), and our guide to [home insurance in Sellersburg](https://yellowribboninsurance.com/blog/home-insurance/home-insurance-in-sellersburg-indiana-coverage-costs-and-quote-questions/) covers the house.

## What should you have ready for a Sellersburg car insurance quote?

**The short answer:** Have your current declarations page, every household driver's license details, each car's VIN, the Sellersburg garaging address and a realistic picture of your weekly miles ready before you call.

* **Declarations page**: current limits, deductibles and any rental or towing add-ons
* **Drivers**: everyone licensed at the address, plus anyone about to get a permit
* **Vehicles**: year, make, model, VIN, and any lender or lessor
* **Garaging**: the Sellersburg street address and ZIP where each car is kept overnight
* **Use**: commute days and miles, or that you've retired, and where the car parks during the day
* **History**: tickets, claims and any BMV letters from the last few years

Our checklist of [what you need for an Indiana car insurance quote](https://yellowribboninsurance.com/blog/auto-insurance/what-information-do-you-need-for-a-car-insurance-quote-in-indiana/) walks through each item. Then ask the questions that decide how a claim would go:

1. Does my per-person liability limit fit what my household owns?
2. Are my uninsured and underinsured motorist limits at least as high as my liability limits, and is uninsured motorist property damage included?
3. Do I carry comprehensive, and could I pay either deductible next week?
4. How does my policy respond to a crash in Kentucky?
5. Is the mileage on my policy still right after a retirement, a new job or a detour?
6. Which discounts might apply to my household? Eligibility varies.

If the BMV asks for proof of insurance after a crash report, your insurance company files a Certificate of Compliance, and the [BMV](https://www.in.gov/bmv/licenses-permits-ids/suspension-and-reinstatement/proof-of-financial-responsibility/) must receive and process it within 90 days of its request or your driving privileges will be suspended.

If a past accident, lapse or violation makes a standard auto policy hard to get, we may have non-standard auto options. Eligibility depends on the driver; call us at [(812) 577-8749](tel:8125778749) to see what fits, or see [our office hours and map](https://yellowribboninsurance.com/contact/).

## Bottom line

In short: Indiana sets the rules for car insurance in Sellersburg, but the town's own roads, ages and commutes decide which parts of a policy get tested.

The legal floor is 25/50/25, with uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage included unless you reject it in writing. On top of that, Sellersburg logged 335 collisions in 2024, spent most of 2026 with one direction of US 31 closed and traffic pushed onto detours, sits on two I-65 exits and is part of a county where 17.6% of the resident labor force commutes to Kentucky.

Statewide averages are context, not your price. Check your per-person liability limit, your UM/UIM limits and both deductibles, and make sure your mileage and driver list still match your household.

## Frequently asked questions

Will the 2026 US 31 closure in Sellersburg change my car insurance?

Not by itself. A road closure doesn't change your coverage or your policy terms. What can change is how much you drive. If the detours the [Town of Sellersburg](https://sellersburg.org/featured_events/indot-us-31-closures/) suggested, such as Stacy Road, Salem-Noble Road and East 10th Street to I-265, add real miles to your week, mention it at your next review, because the [Indiana Department of Insurance](https://www.in.gov/idoi/consumer-services/types-of-insurance/auto-insurance/) lists car use among the factors insurers may use. If you have a fender-bender in the work zone, it's handled like any other crash: liability for the other car, collision for yours after your deductible.

Should I tell my insurance company when I retire and stop commuting from Sellersburg?

Yes. Your quote was built partly on how you use the car, and the [Indiana Department of Insurance](https://www.in.gov/idoi/consumer-services/types-of-insurance/auto-insurance/) lists car use among the factors insurers may use. A daily drive down I-65 and a few errands a week are different patterns, so give your agent the new picture: how many days you drive, roughly how far, and whether the car still crosses into Kentucky. Retirement is also a good moment to look at your limits again, since what you own may have changed. The Census Bureau counts 22.9% of Sellersburg residents as 65 or older (2020–2024 American Community Survey).

If a neighbor borrows my car in Sellersburg and causes a crash, whose policy pays?

Your own policy can respond. The [Insurance Information Institute](https://www.iii.org/article/what-covered-basic-auto-insurance-policy) says property damage liability pays for damage caused by you or someone driving your vehicle with your permission, and bodily injury liability applies to injuries caused by a driver authorized to use your car. Your collision coverage would handle your own car after your deductible. That means the claim goes on your policy and uses its limits. Before you hand over the keys, check your policy wording for who counts as a permitted driver, and list anyone in your household who drives your car regularly.

Is my car covered if a storm drops hail or a tree limb on it in my Sellersburg driveway?

Yes, if you carry comprehensive. The [Indiana Department of Insurance](https://www.in.gov/idoi/consumer-services/types-of-insurance/auto-insurance/) lists windstorm and glass breakage among the losses comprehensive pays for, and the [Insurance Information Institute](https://www.iii.org/article/what-covered-basic-auto-insurance-policy) includes hail and falling trees. Your comprehensive deductible applies once to the claim. A liability-only policy pays nothing toward your own car in a storm. If the same limb also damages your house, fence or garage, that part is a homeowners question, with its own deductible. Take photos before anything is moved, and cover broken glass so rain doesn't add more damage.

Do I have to carry collision and comprehensive on a car I own outright in Indiana?

Indiana law doesn't require them. [Indiana Code 9-25-4-5](https://law.justia.com/codes/indiana/title-9/article-25/chapter-4/section-9-25-4-5/) sets minimum amounts for liability, the coverage for harm you cause to others, and the Indiana Department of Insurance adds the uninsured and underinsured motorist rule. Collision and comprehensive are optional once no lender or lessor requires them. The real question is whether you could repair or replace the car yourself after a crash, a deer strike or a theft. If the answer is no, dropping them can leave you with nothing toward your own car. Ask your agent what each coverage costs on your car before deciding.

## Related questions

### My teen will drive from the Greenwood subdivision to the Silver Creek school campus. What should we tell the insurer?

Tell your agent before the first solo drive, and ask how a permit holder is handled. The [Indiana Department of Insurance](https://www.in.gov/idoi/consumer-services/types-of-insurance/auto-insurance/) lists age and driver training among the factors insurers may use. Clark County drivers aged 15 to 20 were in crashes at 1,178.3 per 10,000 licensed in 2024 (IU Public Policy Institute). Mention which car your teen will use and the daily route.

### What is uninsured motorist property damage coverage, and does my policy have it?

It pays for damage to your car when a driver without insurance causes the crash. The [Indiana Department of Insurance](https://www.in.gov/idoi/consumer-services/types-of-insurance/auto-insurance/) lists a $25,000 minimum for uninsured motorist property damage alongside the bodily injury minimums. Whether it's on your policy, and how it works alongside collision, depends on your policy. Look for it on your declarations page, or ask your agent to point to it.

### Is a crash in one of the planned State Road 60 roundabouts handled differently by insurance?

No. The same coverages apply wherever the crash happens. Indiana isn't on the Insurance Information Institute's [list of no-fault states](https://www.iii.org/article/background-on-no-fault-auto-insurance), so the driver who caused it can be held responsible, and their liability coverage pays up to its limits. Collision covers your own car after your deductible. The Town of Sellersburg lists roundabouts INDOT planned on State Road 60; get a crash report either way.

### Does buying a house in Sellersburg mean I should raise my car insurance liability limits?

The law doesn't change, but what you have at stake does. In a fault state, the [Insurance Information Institute](https://www.iii.org/article/background-on-no-fault-auto-insurance) notes, an at-fault driver can be sued by the other driver and passengers, and anything above your limits can be sought from you. Census figures show 80.0% of Sellersburg homes are owner-occupied. Ask your agent whether your limits fit, and whether umbrella coverage is available on your account.
