What Indiana requires, how Harrison County's rural crash pattern, the I-64 commute east, one of the state's biggest deer harvests and winter storms shape a Corydon driver's coverage, what moves the price, and what to ask before your next quote.

Quick answer

Car insurance in Corydon, Indiana starts with the state rules: at least 25/50/25 liability, plus uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage unless you reject it in writing. The local part is the driving: long I-64 commutes, rural roads where most county crashes happen, deer and winter weather.

* Harrison County had 994 collisions in 2024, 180 in Corydon and 742 outside any town (IU Public Policy Institute).
* The county's mean commute is 30.5 minutes, versus 24.1 statewide (Census, 2020–2024).
* Harrison County had Indiana's fourth-highest deer harvest in 2024, and hitting a deer is usually a comprehensive claim.
* Indiana drivers spent an average of $1,019 per insured vehicle in 2024 (NAIC). That's a statewide average, not your price.

Do this: pull up your declarations page and check your liability and UM/UIM limits, both deductibles, and whether towing and rental coverage are listed.

## What car insurance does Indiana require for a Corydon driver?

**The short answer:** Indiana requires liability coverage of at least $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident and $25,000 for property damage, and your policy includes uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage unless you reject it in writing.

The liability floor is in [Indiana Code 9-25-4-5](https://law.justia.com/codes/indiana/title-9/article-25/chapter-4/section-9-25-4-5/). The property damage minimum went from $10,000 to $25,000 on July 1, 2018, which is why you'll still see the old "25/50/10" on some pages.

The uninsured and underinsured motorist rule is in [Indiana Code 27-7-5-2](https://law.justia.com/codes/indiana/title-27/article-7/chapter-5/section-27-7-5-2/). Your insurance company has to make that coverage available at limits at least equal to your bodily injury liability limits, and underinsured motorist coverage can't be sold below $50,000. A named insured can reject it in writing, and once rejected, it doesn't have to be offered again when the policy renews or is replaced with the same insurance company, unless you ask for it in writing. The [Indiana Department of Insurance](https://www.in.gov/idoi/consumer-services/types-of-insurance/auto-insurance/) lists the uninsured motorist minimums as $25,000/$50,000 for injuries and $25,000 for property damage. Our guide to [Indiana's required car insurance](https://yellowribboninsurance.com/blog/auto-insurance/what-car-insurance-is-required-in-indiana/) covers proof of insurance and the rest of the legal detail.

The minimum is a floor, not a recommendation. Here's how each coverage meets Corydon's roads.

| Coverage | What it pays for | The Corydon question to ask |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Bodily injury and property damage liability | Injuries and damage you cause to others | If I cause a crash merging onto I-64 at Exit 105, would my per-person limit cover a serious injury? |
| Uninsured and underinsured motorist | Your injuries, and your car where uninsured motorist property damage is on the policy, when the at-fault driver has no insurance or too little | Did a named insured on my policy ever sign a rejection, and are my limits as high as my liability limits? |
| Collision | Damage to your car from a collision or upset, after your deductible | Could I pay this deductible if I slid off a county road into a ditch? |
| Comprehensive | Theft, fire, hail, falling trees and hitting an animal, after your deductible | What would I owe after a deer strike on State Road 135? |
| Towing and rental | Optional add-ons where your insurance company offers them | If my car is in the shop for weeks, how would I get to work? |

A lender or lease may require comprehensive and collision, so check the finance contract. Our [car insurance page](https://yellowribboninsurance.com/auto/) lists the auto coverages we write, and the [Indiana car insurance guide](https://yellowribboninsurance.com/blog/auto-insurance/indiana-car-insurance-guide-coverage-costs-and-quote-questions/) walks through each coverage line statewide.

## How many crashes happen in Corydon and the rest of Harrison County?

**The short answer:** Indiana University's Public Policy Institute counted 994 collisions in Harrison County in 2024: 180 inside Corydon and 742 in unincorporated parts of the county, with 10 people killed.

742 of 994

Harrison County collisions in 2024 that happened outside any town's limits, about three in four. Corydon accounted for 180. Source: Indiana Traffic Safety Facts, [Harrison County 2024](https://policyinstitute.iu.edu/research-analysis/traffic-safety/county/2024/harrison.pdf), Indiana University Public Policy Institute, 2024 data.

That split is the local story: most Harrison County crashes happen on the state roads, county roads and interstate miles between towns. After Corydon, the next-largest town counts were small: 20 in Lanesville and 18 in Palmyra.

The same 2024 sheet lists 64 speed-related collisions and 23 alcohol-impaired collisions countywide. The county total has come down from 1,200 in 2022 and 1,045 in 2023, while Corydon's count rose slightly, from 169 in the [2023 county report](https://policyinstitute.iu.edu/research-analysis/traffic-safety/county/2023/harrison.pdf) to 180.

The driver who hits you may not have much coverage, or any. The Insurance Research Council estimates [14.0% of Indiana motorists](https://www.iii.org/fact-statistic/facts-statistics-uninsured-motorists) were uninsured in 2023, as published by the Insurance Information Institute.

**Where the other driver's policy runs out:** if someone carrying only 25/50/25, or nothing, injures you on a rural road, your own uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage is what responds. If a named insured signed a rejection years ago, that rejection can still apply when the policy renews with the same insurance company. Ask to see it.

## Does commuting from Corydon to New Albany or Louisville change your car insurance?

**The short answer:** Your policy is still built around where the car is kept in Harrison County, but a long daily drive east on I-64 adds miles, and miles belong in the car-use details you give for a quote.

The [Indiana Department of Transportation's interchange list](https://www.in.gov/indot/resources/maps/interchange-book/i-64-from-griffin-to-new-albany/) names Exit 105, at State Road 135, as Corydon's I-64 exit. Exit 113 at Lanesville Road is the next one east.

Harrison County drives are long. The Census Bureau puts the county's mean travel time to work at [30.5 minutes](https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/harrisoncountyindiana/PST045224), against [24.1 minutes for Indiana](https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/IN/PST045224) (2020–2024 American Community Survey). [STATS Indiana](https://www.stats.indiana.edu/web/county/commuting/2024/Harrison.asp) reports that in tax year 2024, 2,230 Harrison County residents worked in Floyd County, 1,538 in Clark County and 3,799 in Kentucky, which is 14.0% of the county's resident labor force.

If your job is in Louisville, I-64 crosses the Ohio River on the Sherman Minton Bridge. As of October 2026, [RiverLink](https://riverlink.com/about/non-tolled-alternatives/) says the Sherman Minton "remains toll free," while tolls are collected on the Abraham Lincoln, Lewis and Clark and Kennedy bridges. Tolls don't change your insurance, but the round trip does add up on the odometer.

* **Count real miles:** a five-day round trip from Corydon to downtown Louisville is a different exposure from a few trips into town each week.
* **Say where the car parks by day:** a lot at work in Louisville or New Albany is part of the picture.
* **Ask about crashes across the river:** how your policy responds to a crash in Kentucky depends on its wording, so ask your agent before you need to know.

Our [New Albany car insurance guide](https://yellowribboninsurance.com/blog/auto-insurance/car-insurance-in-new-albany-indiana-coverage-costs-and-quote-questions/) covers the Floyd County end of the drive.

## What pays when you hit a deer on State Road 135 or another Harrison County road?

**The short answer:** Hitting the deer is usually a comprehensive claim, while swerving into a tree, a ditch or another car is usually a collision claim, so the choice in that half-second can change which deductible applies.

The [Indiana DNR's 2024 deer report](https://www.in.gov/dnr/fish-and-wildlife/files/fw-deer-summary-report-2024.pdf) lists 2,603 deer harvested in the county, fourth-highest of any Indiana county, and estimates that 75% of the county is deer habitat. Harvest isn't a crash count, and we couldn't find a published Harrison County deer-crash figure, but it's a sign of how many deer live here.

Statewide, the [DNR](https://www.in.gov/dnr/fish-and-wildlife/wildlife-resources/animals/white-tailed-deer/living-with-deer/deer-vehicle-collisions) says more than 15,000 deer-vehicle collisions are reported to INDOT each year, with an estimated $104.5 million in vehicle damage in 2024. They peak from September through December, especially October and November, and at dawn and dusk. The DNR's advice: "Never swerve to avoid hitting a deer." The [Indiana State Police](https://secure.in.gov/isp/resources/additional-resources/links/deer-vehicle-crashes/) add that after a strike you should stay in the car, check on your passengers and call police for a crash report.

Insurance follows the same line. The [Insurance Information Institute](https://www.iii.org/article/what-covered-basic-auto-insurance-policy) lists "striking an animal" under comprehensive, while collision covers hitting another vehicle or a stationary object such as a tree or utility pole. The Highway Loss Data Institute found the [average November animal-strike claim was $4,600](https://www.iihs.org/news/detail/dip-in-deer-strikes-poses-a-mystery-for-insurers-ahead-of-peak-season) over 2013–2022.

Illustrative example

A hypothetical Corydon driver heading home on State Road 135 at dusk in November meets a deer. The repair bill comes to $4,600, the HLDI average used here as a round figure. The policy has a $500 comprehensive deductible and a $1,000 collision deductible.

| | |
| --- | --- |
| Brakes and hits the deer: comprehensive ($4,600 damage, $500 deductible) | Policy pays $4,100 / you pay $500 |
| Swerves into a roadside tree instead: collision (same $4,600 damage, $1,000 deductible) | Policy pays $3,600 / you pay $1,000 |
| Same deer strike on a liability-only policy | Policy pays $0 / you pay $4,600 |

Illustrative only, not a quote and not a promise of how any claim is paid. Real repair costs vary widely, and coverage, fault and payment depend on the facts and your policy. Your deductibles are on your declarations page.

**Before October:** check that every car you'd hate to replace carries comprehensive, and that you could pay its deductible next week. Liability-only coverage pays nothing toward your own car after a deer strike.

## What coverage matters when a crash leaves you stranded on a rural Harrison County road?

**The short answer:** Collision or comprehensive pays to repair your own car after the deductible, but towing and rental car coverage are separate, optional add-ons, so check whether they're on your policy before you need a tow from a county road.

With three in four Harrison County crashes happening outside town limits in 2024, a crash here is more likely to leave you on a state road or county road than on a town street. The [Indiana Department of Insurance](https://www.in.gov/idoi/consumer-services/types-of-insurance/auto-insurance/) says coverages "such as towing and car rental" may be available, and the NAIC's [consumer guide to auto insurance](https://content.naic.org/sites/default/files/publication-aut-pp-consumer-auto.pdf) describes them as coverage "for towing and rental car when your car is disabled."

* **Towing:** ask what the policy pays toward a tow and whether there's a per-incident limit.
* **Rental:** ask for the daily amount and the maximum number of days.
* **Repairs:** ask how your insurance company handles estimates if your preferred repair facility is out of town.

### Pickups, farm trucks and side-by-sides

List every vehicle you drive on public roads, including an older pickup that only gets used for hauling. Side-by-sides and ATVs are a separate question. The [Indiana DNR](https://www.in.gov/dnr/outdoor-recreation/trails/off-roading/off-roading-on-county-roads) says laws governing off-road vehicles on public roads "are made individually by each county," and that county rules may include insurance requirements. Check Harrison County's current rules before riding on a road, and ask your agent how that vehicle should be insured. Describe how each vehicle is used, since a farm or business vehicle may need a different policy.

## How does winter weather around Corydon affect a car insurance claim?

**The short answer:** Sliding off an icy road into a ditch, a guardrail or another car is generally a collision claim, while a tree or limb that falls on a parked car is generally comprehensive, so both deductibles matter in winter.

The National Weather Service office in Louisville documented a [January 5–6, 2025 winter storm](https://www.weather.gov/lmk/january_5_2025_winter_storm) that dropped 6 to 12 inches of snow and sleet across southern Indiana and northern Kentucky. Preliminary reports included 7.0 inches measured in Corydon and 12.0 inches in Palmyra, and the NWS noted that many area roads were still snow- and ice-covered on Monday night.

* **You slide into the ditch on your own:** collision, after your collision deductible.
* **You slide into another car:** property damage liability pays for their car; collision handles yours.
* **A limb comes down on the car in the driveway:** comprehensive. The [Insurance Information Institute](https://www.iii.org/article/what-covered-basic-auto-insurance-policy) lists falling trees and hail there.

**After a slide-off:** if anyone is hurt, or if it looks like $1,000 or more in damage, the [Indiana State Police](https://secure.in.gov/isp/resources/additional-resources/links/deer-vehicle-crashes/) say the crash must be reported. Take photos before the car is towed, then call your insurance company.

## How much does car insurance cost in Corydon?

**The short answer:** No official Corydon or Harrison County average is published, but NAIC data put Indiana's average spend at $1,019 per insured vehicle in 2024, and your price comes from your drivers, cars, garaging address, miles and coverage choices.

The [NAIC's 2024 Auto Insurance Database average premium supplement](https://content.naic.org/sites/default/files/2024-adb-average-premium-supplement.pdf), published September 2026, is the most recent official state figure. Indiana's average expenditure was $1,019 per insured vehicle, below the $1,432 countrywide figure. That describes what drivers spent in 2024. They aren't a quote for your car.

The [Indiana Department of Insurance](https://www.in.gov/idoi/consumer-services/types-of-insurance/auto-insurance/) says it "does not set auto rates." It lists the factors insurance companies may use, including car use, place of residence, driver record, type of car, limits, deductibles and claims history. Here's how those show up for a Corydon household.

### Garaging address

Quote the address where each car spends the night, whether that's in town or out on a county road.

### Miles and use

A 30-minute-plus I-64 commute and a retiree's trips into town are different exposures. Give real numbers.

### Drivers at home

Age, experience and driver training count. In 2024, Harrison County drivers aged 15 to 20 were in crashes at 867.2 per 10,000 licensed, versus 303.2 for drivers 65 and older.

### Record and claims

Tickets, at-fault crashes and past claims are on the department's list.

### Type of vehicle

Repair and replacement costs drive the comprehensive and collision part of the premium, for a pickup as much as a sedan.

### Limits, deductibles, discounts

Higher limits cost more and higher deductibles cost less. Discounts may be available · eligibility varies by insurance company.

The age rates come from the [IU Public Policy Institute](https://policyinstitute.iu.edu/research-analysis/traffic-safety/county/2024/harrison.pdf) and aren't a prediction for your family. For the statewide numbers in more depth, see [what car insurance costs in Indiana](https://yellowribboninsurance.com/blog/auto-insurance/how-much-does-car-insurance-cost-in-indiana/). If you own your home, ask whether putting home and auto on one account could help; our [guide to bundling home and auto](https://yellowribboninsurance.com/blog/bundle-and-save/) explains what to check (discounts may be available · eligibility varies by insurance company).

## What should you have ready for a Corydon car insurance quote?

**The short answer:** Have your declarations page, every household driver's license details, each vehicle's VIN, the address and ZIP where each car is kept overnight, and an honest estimate of your weekly miles.

The garaging address matters because place of residence is one of the factors the Department of Insurance lists. That's why our quote form asks for the ZIP where the car is kept, not where you work. If a car spends weeknights at a different address, say so.

* **Declarations page:** current limits, deductibles, and any towing or rental coverage
* **Drivers:** everyone licensed at the address, plus anyone about to get a permit
* **Vehicles:** year, make, model, VIN, and any lender, including the work pickup
* **Garaging:** the street address and ZIP where each car is kept overnight
* **Use:** commute days and round-trip miles, and where the car parks during the day
* **History:** tickets and claims from the last few years

Our [Indiana car insurance quote checklist](https://yellowribboninsurance.com/blog/auto-insurance/what-information-do-you-need-for-a-car-insurance-quote-in-indiana/) goes through each item. Then ask:

1. Does my per-person liability limit fit what my household owns?
2. Are my uninsured and underinsured motorist limits as high as my liability limits, and did anyone reject them in writing?
3. Do I carry comprehensive on every car, and could I pay both deductibles?
4. Do I have towing and rental coverage, and what are the limits?
5. How would my policy respond to a crash on the Louisville side of the river?
6. Is every vehicle that uses a public road, including a pickup or side-by-side, insured the right way?

If a past accident, lapse or violation makes a standard policy hard to get, we may have non-standard auto options. Eligibility depends on the driver. Call [(812) 577-8749](tel:8125778749) or see [our office hours and map](https://yellowribboninsurance.com/contact/).

## Bottom line

In short: Indiana's rules set the floor for car insurance in Corydon, but Harrison County's long commutes, rural roads, deer and winter storms decide which parts of a policy actually get used.

The law asks for 25/50/25 liability plus uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage unless it's rejected in writing. On top of that, three in four Harrison County crashes in 2024 happened outside town limits, the average commute runs 30.5 minutes, and the county ranked fourth in Indiana's 2024 deer harvest. Check your liability and UM/UIM limits, both deductibles, and whether towing and rental are on the policy, and make sure your garaging address and miles are current.

## Frequently asked questions

Does living outside Corydon town limits change my car insurance?

It can matter, because the address where the car is kept is part of your quote. The [Indiana Department of Insurance](https://www.in.gov/idoi/consumer-services/types-of-insurance/auto-insurance/) lists place of residence among the factors insurance companies may use. What doesn't change is the law: the same 25/50/25 minimum and uninsured motorist rule apply in town and on a county road. Give the exact garaging address and ZIP for each car, even if your mailing address is different, and mention a long commute. In 2024, 742 of Harrison County's 994 collisions happened in unincorporated areas ([IU Public Policy Institute](https://policyinstitute.iu.edu/research-analysis/traffic-safety/county/2024/harrison.pdf)).

Is the Sherman Minton Bridge tolled if I commute from Corydon to Louisville?

No. As of October 2026, [RiverLink](https://riverlink.com/about/non-tolled-alternatives/) says the Sherman Minton Bridge, which carries I-64 between New Albany and West Louisville, remains toll-free. Tolls are collected on the Abraham Lincoln, Lewis and Clark and Kennedy bridges. Tolls don't affect your insurance, but your mileage can, since the Department of Insurance lists car use among rating factors. Tell your agent how many days a week you cross and roughly how far the round trip is, and ask how your policy responds to a crash in Kentucky.

My car slid off an icy road near Corydon and hit nothing but the ditch. Is that covered?

If you carry collision, it's generally handled there, after your collision deductible. The [Indiana Department of Insurance](https://www.in.gov/idoi/consumer-services/types-of-insurance/auto-insurance/) describes collision as paying for damage caused by "collision or upset," and a car that leaves the road and rolls or strikes the ditch generally falls under it. A liability-only policy wouldn't pay for your own car. If someone is hurt or damage looks like $1,000 or more, the [Indiana State Police](https://secure.in.gov/isp/resources/additional-resources/links/deer-vehicle-crashes/) say the crash must be reported. Photograph the scene before the tow.

Do I need to tell my insurance company about a side-by-side I drive on Harrison County roads?

Yes, talk to your agent about it. A personal auto policy is written for the vehicles listed on it, and an off-road vehicle is a separate question. The [Indiana DNR](https://www.in.gov/dnr/outdoor-recreation/trails/off-roading/off-roading-on-county-roads) says each county makes its own laws on off-road vehicles on public roads, and those rules may include insurance requirements. Check Harrison County's current ordinance, then ask how the vehicle should be insured for how you actually use it, whether that's around the farm, on trails or on a county road.

Can I drop collision and comprehensive on an older pickup I own outright?

Indiana law doesn't require them. [Indiana Code 9-25-4-5](https://law.justia.com/codes/indiana/title-9/article-25/chapter-4/section-9-25-4-5/) sets liability minimums, and collision and comprehensive are optional once no lender requires them. The question is whether you could fix or replace the truck yourself. In Harrison County, that includes a deer strike: the [Insurance Information Institute](https://www.iii.org/article/what-covered-basic-auto-insurance-policy) lists striking an animal under comprehensive, so dropping it means paying for that damage out of pocket. Ask your agent what each coverage costs on that truck before deciding.

### We live on a county road outside Palmyra, and the car sits in a gravel drive. Does that change anything?

The coverage rules are the same, but give the exact garaging address, since place of residence is a rating factor. Palmyra measured 12.0 inches of snow in the [January 2025 storm](https://www.weather.gov/lmk/january_5_2025_winter_storm), so check your collision deductible for slide-offs and your comprehensive deductible for falling limbs.

### Is a deer strike on I-64 handled differently from one on State Road 135?

No. The road doesn't change the coverage. Hitting the animal is generally comprehensive, per the [Insurance Information Institute](https://www.iii.org/article/what-covered-basic-auto-insurance-policy), and swerving into a guardrail or another car is generally collision. Interstate speeds can mean more damage, so check that your comprehensive deductible is one you could pay.

### Does my teen's drive to school in Corydon change our quote?

Adding a licensed teen usually does. The Department of Insurance lists age and driver training as rating factors, and in 2024 Harrison County drivers aged 15 to 20 were in crashes at 867.2 per 10,000 licensed ([IU Public Policy Institute](https://policyinstitute.iu.edu/research-analysis/traffic-safety/county/2024/harrison.pdf)). Tell your agent before the first solo drive and say which car your teen will use.

### What is uninsured motorist property damage, and do I have it?

It pays for damage to your car when an uninsured driver causes the crash. The [Indiana Department of Insurance](https://www.in.gov/idoi/consumer-services/types-of-insurance/auto-insurance/) lists a $25,000 minimum for it. Whether it's on your policy, and how it works alongside collision, depends on your policy. Look for it on your declarations page or ask your agent.

### If I start working from home in Corydon, should I update my policy?

Yes. A commute that stops is a change in car use, which the [Department of Insurance](https://www.in.gov/idoi/consumer-services/types-of-insurance/auto-insurance/) lists as a rating factor. With Harrison County's mean commute at 30.5 minutes (Census, 2020–2024), dropping it can be a real change in miles. Give your agent the new weekly picture.
